Everyone’s Favorite (Keto Diet) Ranks Last On Best Diets

Ketogenic or keto diet is a high-fat low-carb diet that involves drastic reduction* of carbohydrate intake and replacing it with healthy fat. Decreased* consumption of carbs puts the body into the state of ketosis that burns fat for energy more efficiently.

People adhere to this popular diet due to a number of reasons including weight loss*, diabetes management, and others. Although popular eating pattern, keto diet ranked last on the list of best diets to follow in 2018. Find out more below.

Best Diets of
People who want to slim down or make healthy diet choices to support their health have numerous options to choose from. It seems like new diet fads emerge all the time, but they can be harmful to your health due to overly restrictive nature.

Some diets are, actually, eating patterns of people who live in a certain area e.g. the Mediterranean while others were created by doctors to help patients overcome some health problem.

Choosing a diet can be a frustrating experience. You want to reach your goal fast, but at the same time, you want to choose the right diet to make it happen. The US News evaluated[1] a total of 40 diets to compile the list of best eating patterns to follow.

In order to rank high or to be considered top-rated, a diet had to be easy to follow, safe, nutritious, effective for weight loss*, and protect from heart disease and diabetes.

The ranking was published on the US News official website and results will, definitely, surprise you. The first spot on the list is reserved for two diets: DASH and the Mediterranean diet.

DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet was developed to lower blood pressure without medication in research sponsored by the US National Institutes of Health.

Interestingly, this diet has held the top spot in the best diets list for eight consecutive years. Why is it #1? DASH diet is nutritious, easy to follow, safe, and fits all other criteria.

Mediterranean diet is considered the healthiest eating pattern in the world. It’s not a dietary program one has to adhere to, but a lifestyle. The diet isn’t restrictive, promotes* intake of different foods, but favors consumption of fruits, vegetables, olive oil, and seafood.

Lowest-Ranking Diets
The lowest-ranking diets spot is a tie between keto diet and a relatively unknown Dukan diet. The purpose of keto diet was elaborated above. Let’s move on to Dukan diet first; it’s a high-protein low-carb weight loss* diet that is divided into four different phases: attack, cruise, consolidation, and stabilization phase.

The primary reason why these two diets were ranked lowest is due to the fact they promote eating huge amounts of protein and minimal carbs to achieve ketosis. People who adhere to these diets tend to feel fatigue and lightheadedness as their body is getting used to lack of carbs.

Experts who reviewed studies to create the list explained that following keto diet means you cut carbs to only 20 a day, less than an apple. Both diets that ranked last aren’t the sustainable or long-term solution to one’s needs.

Basically, they’re not practical in the long run. Ideally, your diet should be easy to integrate into the lifestyle. A complete list of best diets in 2018 is here[2].

Conclusion
Popular keto diet that many people use for weight loss* and diabetes management ranked last, together with Dukan, on the list of best diets of 2018. Low ranking is due to restrictive eating pattern, difficulty to adhere to diet, fatigue, and lightheadedness that many people experience and because it’s not a sustainable long-term solution.
